Thus there's only one solder-joint between cartridge output pins to preamp inputs. I'm very grateful.I've bypassed the old SME connector, and twisted/soldered my exit cables directly to the internal TA wiring. Thanks to all who have chimed in to help. I have since ordered a Wire World XLR tonearm cable from Ivan, with a grounding pigtail to see if I get any sonic improvement! So by relocating my Pulsare power supply seemed to solve the problem. I did have a ground wire made with a spade on one end and an alligator clip on the other, but that proved to be completely ineffective.
So with a members suggestion to separate the two units, I did, and the slight hum was reduced significantly. The problem ended up being that the AVID Pulsare (2 components, one pre and one power supply) were too close to one another.
It is designed into the cable within the three pin configuration. This is when I started noticing a slight HUM. Since the AVID Pulsare will receive either single ended RCA or balanced XLR cables, I thought I would upgrade again, so I went up the Nordost line and bought the XLR Tyr. I still was using the Nordost Heimdall with good results. A night and day difference in sound quality over the McIntosh.
I then took the C2300 out of the loop and went to the AVID Pulsare phono preamp. The Nordost only had one pigtail for ground, where the SME has two pigtails for grounding. I upgrade to a Nordost Heimdall that had a ground pigtail and the sonic results with that cable were amazingly better than the stock SME cable. Had it hooked to the McIntosh C2300, also. I used to use the stock SME cable that you're speaking of. I also have the tone arm grounded to the my JA Michelle turntable and Shelter 501 cartridge. I am using the stock tone arm cable which has two ground wires and I have them both attached to the ground terminal on the back of my Mcintosh C2300 pre amp.
